  • All candidates must submit a personal statement (up to 500 words) via upload below addressing the following: Describe current and past anesthesiology practice and experience and any leadership or teaching role in the specialty. Discuss how this scholarship will improve the care of patients in your institution, country or region. Describe briefly your English language training and skills (courses, travel, practicum, English language examinations) and your career goals.

  • Additional requirements:

    • Candidates should be a young practicing physician (under 40 years of age) and practicing in a World Bank classified Low or Lower Middle Income country (http://www.worldbank.org/en/country).
    • All scholars will make themselves available for a scheduled discussion session and group photographs at the ASA Charitable Foundation booth in the Exhibit Hall, during the meeting, schedule to be determined.
    • All scholars are expected to give a poster presentation in the Medically Challenging Cases session during the Annual Meeting.  A title and outline for a 10-15-minute poster presentation on a current issue or challenging case in your anesthesia practice should be submitted by August 1, 2025.
    • If the Global Scholar also attends an anesthesia subspecialty meeting on Friday, October 10, 2025, and participates in an observership at a university teaching hospital, the visit will require a minimum of 10 days time commitment.  The head of your department must submit written confirmation of your availability for this period of time.
    • Travel documents:  ASA will provide a letter indicating that you have received a scholarship for this program.  This can be used to support a visa application if you do not already have a valid visa. 
      • You must be able to secure all necessary passports and visas for travel to the US. 
      • You will be responsible for any passport and visa fees. 
      • All candidates must submit a copy of their passport to ASA at the time of notification of selection for the program.
    • Required vaccinations: Observership sites will have required vaccinations that you must have proof of receiving prior to your arrival in the U.S.
    • Scholars will be expected to submit a written report (or equivalent) describing their experience within 15 days of the conclusion of the ASA Annual meeting.
    • Travel support (hotel and airfare) will be paid for by ASA up to a maximum of US $3750. 
      • Air and lodging arrangements will be made through the ASA designated travel bureau. 
      • ASA will also provide a stipend for other expenses (ground transportation, meals) via a pre-loaded Visa card when scholars arrive in the U.S. Stipends may not be available to you until you arrive at your hotel in Philadelphia. Any expenses prior to receiving your stipend will be the scholar's responsibility.
